Required Reading

Required Reading is a weekly listing of all the bits of visual inspiration, cool videos, news, hip links, and miscellaneous information that rattles my head during the week. The stuff that’s worth bookmarking and gets my brain-juices flowing – hopefully yours as well.

The incredible video for Iron by Woodkid, directed by Yoann Lemoine. I love any video where every single frame of the whole bloody video could serve as an absolutely stunning still image, and this is one of those rare and inspiring occurrences, I am truly in awe of this work.

• Naturally, the title alone entices me, but the fact that this article is from the always solid Advanced Riskology Blog makes it a must read – Manufacturing Hate: How To Piss Off Critics and Get People to Love You

• I know I haven’t been blogging about a ton of business or industry related stuff the past few weeks, instead I have been focusing more on the internal than the external. but this post from Photo Shelter just breaks down and shares so many of my own sentiments that I think everyone involved in the photography industry should give it a read.

• I have been reading a lot lately – Just wrapped up some Cormac McCarthy, and am making the jump to Kraken by China Miéville. Going from a post modern western to new weird Fantasy is what my brain requires right now.

• A really interesting short film on Jonathan Mannion, a photographer working extensively in the Hip-Hop genre, whose work has always caught my eye.

• I cannot wait to see Bill Cunningham New York, I have heard nothing but great things about it and must see it immediately.

• I just love the images from the Dior Fall 2011 collection from Paris Fashion Week, Auxiliary Magazine currently has an interesting take on the show. an amazing collection, regardless of all the controversy surrounding its designer.

• The inimitable Nubby Twiglet’s photos from her recent trip to Iceland, I wish everyone’s vacation photos were this stylish.

• Wish there was a tool to create your own private network for social, work, or creative sharing and collaborations… there is now…. check out minigroup. Seems like a perfect tool for working with and coordinating small production groups.

• I have no idea what this song is about, or who this band is, and I find the video for it utterly fascinating.

• You may have caught the news in social media land that Luke Copping Photography is moving into a new and dedicated studio space. I’ll be sharing this new facility with two other colleagues: Aaron Ingrao and Scott Gable, together we will form a photography based crime fighting league the likes of which the world injustice gang has never seen. Stop by their sites to see some of the addictive visual product they push.
